Demolish and remove the former
Brewer Public Works Department

During the meeting, the council also hired H.E. Sargent Inc. to demolish, remove and rough grade the former location of the Brewer Public Works Department on Hardy Street for $18,837. H.E. Sargent is doing shoreline reconstruction at the riverfront and jumped at the chance to demolish the building, said David Cote, director of Public Works, during the meeting.

"I really don't believe we'd find a better bang for our buck," he said. "The initial thought was the cost was going to be between $70,000 and $100,000."

Cote said the subcontractor, Roger Johnson of Winterport, is planning to recycle or reuse much of the building, including the concrete and steel beams.

"The only thing going to the Brewer landfill is the lumber," he said. The price doesn't include any abatement that might need to be done or removal of the old fuel line to the building and the tanks associated with the line, Cote said. The city will hire an abatement specialist to check the building in that regard before the demolition.

"We're hoping there is nothing there," said Cote. "It's a good possibility that we have none or very little."

The project should be complete by the end of February.

"We were concerned about liability issues with this building," said Bost. "We wanted to make sure it was taken down as soon as possible."

Economic Director Drew Sachs said removal of the building is a big step in the Penobscot Landing Riverfront Project.
