· The firm of MBIA Bartram &
Cochran has been hired by the City to help attract investors, developers, and
businesses to the waterfront area. Significant interest has been identified,
and discussions are already underway with some interested parties;
· The City received a $50,000 grant
from the Maine Department of Transportation for the design and engineering of
the waterfront trail system. Receipt of this grant puts the City in a strong
position to obtain Maine and Federal construction funding in the 2004-5 time
period;
· Efforts to stabilize the waterfront
are well underway. Federal and State permits are being prepared, and with the
consent of affected property owners, they will be submitted this Spring. We
are also working with our State and Federal elected representatives to obtain
appropriate funding to support the stabilization effort, and have received
their strong support;
· Trans-Tech Industries and Brewer
Automotive Components, two Brewer-based companies located in the East-West
Industrial Park, have offered materials and funding to the City to develop a
sculpture for the waterfront area. The University of Maine Sculpture Program
has agreed to design and create the artwork; and
· The
University of Maine Engineering Program has taken on Penobscot Landing as a
project for their capstone engineering classes. Students are developing
detailed plans and designs for a number of properties in the waterfront area,
to support City efforts to attract investment.
As we move into the Spring and Summer months, a number of
other critical activities and projects are also expected to be announced,
which will give a strong “kick-start” to Penobscot Landing.
